A famous Hollywood actress of Serbia heritage visited Serbia
When she walked in the building of elementary school, she had watery eyes from the rush of emotions.
-Hey sis, I’m on the corner. You want to meet?-
These are the words famous Hollywood actress said on Wednesday morning in front of her cousin’s house in Indjija. Her call was directed to her sister, the daughter of her aunt who’s sister of her father.
She ran out of the house and fell into the arms of her sister. -That’s Stana! She sneaks in Indjija, and just calls she is here. This visit, as the pervious ones, is private so please be discrete- her cousin told us and wanted to stay anonymous.
Stana Katic is the busiest actress of Serbian heritage in Hollywood today. She is great in the role of detective Kate Beckett, as in Quantum of Solace and people noticed her on the AMA last year in LA because of her glamorous appearance and that’s when she joined to all those famous Hollywood stars. In March, she met with Vuk Jeremic and she said she’s going to visit Serbia and she kept her promise. Instead of Belgrade she arrived in a town of her childhood, Indjija.
Katic’s house and their cousin’s house are near by an elementary school “Jovan Popovic”. Stana arrived in Indjija on May 21st with her manager, who’s American of Serbian heritage. She visited her cousins, sisters of her father and mother, and her brother who lives here and she visited the grave of her early deceased brother. The boy died in a car accident when he was ten years old.
-This is not her first visit to Indjija. She was here as a child because her mom and dad sent her from Canada to Srem (the part of Serbia where is Indjija) to learn Serbian. In order to improve her Serbian, Stana went to elementary school “Jovan Popovic”, the school where her mom was a pupil and she hang out with the kids- says Stana sister. The Katic family is from village Koljani, Dalmatia. The village was flooded in the middle of the previous century. In that time Petar Katic moved to Indjija where he met beautiful Rada and then the rest of the family came to Indjija.
Stana was born in Canada 1978. where her parents emigrated. They had a furniture shop and then they moved to America. Stana finished high school in Aurora, Illinois and then Goodman Drama acting School in Chicago.
-They educated us. They inspired us. They challenged us. We challenged them. They let us travel. They gave us lessons: piano, ballet, karate, and so on. I speak Serbian, English, French and Italian. We traveled the world and the part of my education was to learn to respect the world. - Stana said once about her parents.
Stana and her siblings turned their huge furniture warehouse into a big playground, using some boxes to build high castles. Stana always wanted to be an actress, she encouraged her brothers and sister to play performances when they were kids.
- That’s what keeps me alive. I love to explore the meaning of the life through the imagination, diving in the psyche of other people. I think everyone can express emotions, it depends on us if we are ready to accept that, and that depends of how we were raised and educated, and what kind of experience we had in our life. It’s about empathy for someone and your potential to find yourself in that person. - said Stana in her interviews.
She came to visit her relatives, to revive old memories and to find herself. She spent some time with them, she had a lunch with them, and she had a chance to eat some of her favorite Serbian food. Her sister was fascinated with her look and behavior.
-Stana is modest and discreet girl, she doesn’t want to show off her beauty. She was without make-up, relaxed and really glad that she had a chance to spend some time and kiss all of us. Her big greeny eyes were shiny from happiness. She took a walk through Indjija, some people, especially the young ones recognized her took some photos and autographs. - she describes her sister.
Her cousin says Stana had a trip to Sarajevo, with her friends from “Jovan Popovic” elementary school when she was a kid. That’s why she visited that school and wanted to talk with pupils.
It’s so nice here, it’s so colorful, arranged and cute - said Stana when she walked in the school where pupils made some red floral murals on the walls and they gathered around her immediately.
She was in a white dress with black blazer and black espadrilles, without of make-up, with a big smile and watery eyes.
She almost burst into tears when she saw the classroom where her mom went to school and where she had her lessons of Serbian language.
She almost burst into tears when she saw the classroom where her mom went to school and where she had her lessons of Serbian language and where her little cousins go to school now.
She was so honest, with so honest feeling and that’s why we love her. - Pupils who had a chance to meet her and take a photo with her said.
Her cousins told us a little secret… The famous actress was in Serbia before. First time she visited Skadarlija (that’s the part of Belgrade, she loves that place) with her brother and the second time she went on the concert of singer Zdravko Čolić, and she is a fan of him. She promised she will have an official visit of Serbia and Indjija really soon.
She will make a movie in Serbia we had a chance to find out that from her relatives.
She loves Nikola Tesla
She tweeted a photo in the sweatshirt with face of Nikola Tesla. Some fans asked Michael Anton if she could play in that movie about Serbian genius.
Some medias said her mom is Croat and that she is of Serbo-Croatian heritage but she is Serb. -I’m who I’m and what some people say is irrelevant. - her cousin paraphrased her.
